JolieMD Metamorphosis vs Prescription Strength Hydroquinone: Simply look at the comparison

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Many patients have always thought that in order to even their skin tone and remove the sun damage or post pregnancy heperpigmentatiion, that their only option was to go see their physician and get a prescription for hydroquinone or a hydroquinone containing product like Triluma. And this is just one of the great reasons that we created JolieMD.

First, and most importantly, JolieMD works. Hydoquinone is a compound that simply acts to competitively inhibit the major enzyme (Tyrosinase) that produces your pigment (melanin). What this means is that it competes with the Tyrosinase enzyme’s natural molecule in your body ( an amino acid tyrosine) as it attempts to be converted to melanin. So, in theory, the more hydroquinone you use, the less pigment your body makes.

Unfortunately, hydroquinone has many potential and real draw backs. Hydroquinone is very unstable and rapidly gets oxidized. It can induce redness, skin irritation, contact dermatitis (allergic reaction), and at a high enough concentration it can cause permanent skin depigmentation. Moreover, chronic usage of cosmetics containing hydroquinone can result in ochronosis, which commonly presents as asymptomatic blue-black macules on the cheeks, temples,  and neck. And there are even reports that chronic use can cause your body to exude an offensive fish odor in the sweat that is described as “fish odor syndrome.” As a result of these problems, as well as its potential carcinogenic effects, hydroquinone has already been banned in Europe as well as much of Asia. And here, in the U.S., In 2006, the United States Food and Drug Administration revoked its previous approval of hydroquinone and proposed a ban on all  over the counter preparations. While this did not happen, Dr Litner and I decided that there must be a better alternative- JolieMD.

While products that contain hydroquinone generally rely on its one mechanism to remove spots, JolieMD was formulated to include 19 different active ingredients that have clinically proven lightening abilities, and do not have any of the potential issues that the use of hydroquinone brings up. Moreover, unlike hydroquinone containing alternatives JolieMD has clinically proven anti-aging and anti-acne ingredients that allow you to truly achieve the glowing, youthful, makeup free skin you have always wanted. So below we have included a small chart of just some of the benefits that JolieMD has over hydroquinone containing alternatives. And, we have even attached a more fully developed chart for those interested in a pdf format here Hydroquinone-vs-JolieMD

JolieMD: The Message

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

One of the most important parts of a project like JolieMD was messaging; now that Dr Litner and I had created our hero products, how were we going to explain that this product worked on anti- aging by removing fine lines and wrinkles as well as by evening skin tone, while also combating stubborn acne and hyperpigmentation.

Here we need to first thank Nadine Jolie, who was there to help us take out the medicalese and explain in clear terms what women needed to know. Tirelessly, she edited copy after copy of the philosophy behind the brand, the ingredients present and how they worked, and the irritants that we had avoided and why we had avoided them. She helped fashion the message we wanted to tell: that we had combined over 22% active ingredients in each- Softening Serum and Lightening Lotion- and that was why JolieMD works- period.

And more, Nadine was there, with our Practice Manager Baharak Amirian, to review the packaging to make sure it is feminine enough, sophisticated enough; to feel the products and make sure they are smooth enough, soft enough. Their fingerprints, along with our families and friends, have been present throughout the project from the beginning, and so we named this beautiful new product JolieMD- because from the beginning Dr Litner and I want to create a new brand that has that unique combination that we think had eluded skin care to date- an effective, simple to use product, that was beautiful…that was Jolie.

With the message complete, we turned to the PR expertise of Erin Kelly of The Collective, and our dear friend and retail liaison Danielle Bristol Chang, who together and in their own respective ways have worked tirelessly reaching out to beauty bloggers, beauty editors, and beauty buyers everywhere to get the word out that there is a new brand of skin care- JolieMD.

Dr Litner and I cannot thank our dedicated team enough for all their efforts to let you know about JolieMD.

Designing JolieMD: How JolieMD Became Beautiful

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

When Dr Litner and I started thinking about JolieMD: two things were forefront in our mind

1 It has to work- a hero product

2. It needs to be glamorous, beautiful, and unlike all the other sterile, unisex doctor lines already available

As we wrote yesterday, making a product that was effective, easy to use and gentle took an intense amount of research, time and the help of the team at Free Radical Technology. But perhaps, in some ways almost as important, was the design, packaging and look of the products and for this we need to thank first and foremost, Tracy Capisce of Capisce Design, as well as our very own Nadine Jolie, who as Creative Director was there to help us navigate this process from the beginning.

First, what can we say about the dedication and imagination of Ms Tracy Capisce. Even upon our initial meeting with Tracy, we knew that she was the one who could translate our vision of glamour, sophistication and beauty to this product we had created. After countless reviews and with the help of Marla Litner- Dr Litner’s wife- we had finally chosen an airless bottle, and a conceptual framework- we wanted a beautiful gift- like package that showed the faces of all the various beautiful women’s complexions for whom JolieMD was created. It was Tracy’s job to make the packaging beautiful and sophisticated, even as people all around were telling her and us that faces on a box would not work.

From the beginning Tracy completely accepted the challenge and put herself entirely into the project- tirelessly making herself available for model shoots, packaging press checks, and iteration after iteration of the packaging and website. And we simply cannot thank her enough for her smiling, wonderful imagination that entirely captured our vision.

Finding JolieMD: The Formuation

The Formulation

In our ongoing “Who’s who” list of all those who helped Dr Litner and I create JolieMD, we wanted to turn today to perhaps the most challenging step in the creation of JolieMD- those who helped us in the real work of putting all of the ingredients we wanted together in a formulation that feels great, achieves real results, and is non- irritating.

So in formulation, Dr Litner and I would have to thank first and foremost,  John Garruto, Tina Fleck, and the entire team of chemists at Free Radical Technology who helped us put Metamorphosis together. In formulating Softening Serum and Enlightening Lotion, their team had the unenviable position of having to achieve the previously unimaginable.

In 2 steps we wanted to blend all of the ingredients we had researched and needed to stop acne, treat hyperpigmentation, and fight wrinkles, and the product had to:

1 Be gentle enough for every complexion

2 Stay effective for the life of the product (wanted active ingredients to remain active and not oxidize), and

3. Be free of all the potentially harmful elements (think parabens, sulfates, and phthalates that are ubiquitous in the skin care industry)

The team at Free Radical was amazing in not only achieving our requests but also in making sure that the products felt better smooth and luxurious and did not cause any bleaching or staining of pillows or clothes as so many other products do.

Simply put, the Free Radical Technology team is amazing and Dr Litner and I cannot thank them enough for all their help.

Finding JolieMD- Creating a New Brand of Skin Care

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The Inspiration

In the beginning, Dr Litner and I wanted to accomplish one simple thing:

Create the best possible treatment for the 3 things that all women want from their skin care products:

1. To be rid of acne

2. To have even, smooth complexion, free of hyperpigmentation and the need for cover up

3. To achieve and maintain vibrant, youthful skin as free of wrinkles as possible for as long as possible.

While Dr Litner and I spent hundreds and thousands of hours in researching acne, aging, hyperpigmentation and the ingredients we needed to create the best possible product to treat them, JolieMD’s Metamorphosis would not have been the great product it is but for the help of all the people in our lives who helped us create it. So we wanted to acknowledge the hard work of everyone of the JolieMD team, who each in their own way is a co-creator of our amazing product. Over the next few days we wanted to take some time to highlight the efforts of some of our many co-creators.

For me personally the search for JolieMD, as with all creation, started with an inspiration, my beautiful girlfriend, Sheree. What was striking for me was that over the years Sheree would often remark on how she had never found any skin care products that not only stopped her acne breakouts but also the resulting hyperpigmentation that led her to use cover up every day to even out her complexion.

This simple idea, a product that stopped acne, cleared hyperpigmentation, and allowed for a youthful, wrinkle free complexion brought countless people to us whose contribution, small and large, led Dr Litner and I to create a new brand of skin care.

Reclaiming the beautiful skin you were born with: The revolution in anti- aging skin care

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

We’ve all heard it before. A latest line…a new doctor…and the fountain of youth. It seems that every few months some new miracle cream comes out claiming that if you use their “magic” ingredient, all of your skin problems will disappear in just a few weeks.

For years Dr Litner and I spent day after day explaining to our patients that there is no magic pill, that skin creams can only do so much, and that most do very little, if anything at all; that in fact, the only answer to the natural aging process could be found with surgery. However, we also know a facelift is not for everyone, and even those for whom a facelift did help turn back the hands of time, a facelift cannot correct the age spots, fine wrinkles, and coarse skin that are the result of time and sun damage.

So after years of telling our patients there was no magical cream, we began researching how we could help take care of  not just the fine wrinkles, but also the discoloration, age spots and coarse skin that lead women to wear far more make up than they want. After intensive study and research, the result is JolieMD’s Metamorphosis, our 2 step revolution in anti aging skin care that allows you to reclaim the beautiful skin you were born with:

  • Wrinkles and Loss of Elasticity – JolieMD’s innovative formulation boasts specialized hydroxy acid complexes that bind glycolic and lactic acid with an amino group. The result–  our acids deliver a measured dose over time rather than a “burst” of acid that stings and irritates the skin. So, you can have all the benefits you want– a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, collagen deposition, and improved firmness and elasticity– without the irritation you experience with other acid products.
  • Age Spots and Discoloration – The advanced hydroquinone-free blend of the best known skin brightening ingredients includes alpha arbutin, bearberry, licorice, mulberry, niacinamide, glucosamine, hexylresorcinol, and a skin lightening peptide which allows for a brighter complexion and more even skin tone, helping women with mottled skin and age spots look younger and brighter.
  • Coarseness and Roughness – JolieMD’s combination of Softening Serum and Enlightening Lotion were formulated to deliver the maximum effectiveness but also include the ceramide, essential fatty acids, squalane and plant based sterols to effectively fortify your skin to insure that your skin not only maintains a healthful and beautiful vibrancy but also helps you achieve the softest, smoothest skin you’ve ever known.
  • Inflammation and Redness – Metamorphosis comprises a specialized anti-irritant complex that includes green tea, willowherb, bisabolol and a highly functional, nature identical, oat – based active that further reduces the potential for irritation and sensitization.

And the results of this incredible effort have been simply beautiful.

After one kit, you see softer, brighter skin with reduced fine lines, wrinkles, and an overall more youthful appearance.
