Why does Metamorphosis target acne and discoloration?
That scourge of teenaged skin-acne sometimes lingers into your 20s or even 30s. (Wrinkles and zits simultaneously? Life’s certainly not always fair!) Regardless of age, when acne goes away, the red and brown splotches of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that result are often a far bigger source of annoyance and anxiety than the pimples ever were.
Skin is designed to protect itself so following an acne outbreak, an inflammation cascade supercharges your melanocytes to promote production and distribution of melanin to the acne spot. The result? You’re left with a hazy-bordered dark spot often larger than the original blemish. Just think of it as an unwelcome gift from the pimple to your skin.
While designing Metamorphosis, we wanted to focus on not just evening pigmentation, but also on addressing the underlying cause of fresh excess melanin production: inflammation. After all, what’s the point of removing pre-existing blemishes if ongoing acne causes new ones to form?
